Cataract and Refractive Expert
Dr Au has extensive experience performing complex cataract surgeries through his meticulous residency training at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and fellowship in Complex Cataracts at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH). His refined skills managing difficult cases means that even if complications occur during surgery, he is able to resolve the issue efficiently and effectively, avoiding need for further surgeries.
His Post Graduate studies in Cataract and Refractive Surgery allows for a more extensive understanding of lens optics thus allowing him to match the most appropriate lens to patient's requirements, and more importantly, when certain lenses are not appropriate.
Dr Au's refractive experience started early in his training when he worked with some of the pioneer generation refractive surgeons in UK and Singapore. He then trained under the mentorship of Dr Anton Van Heerden at the Eye Laser Specialist Clinic and they continue their close comaraderie and work affiliations since. Dr Au has cultivated his skills and knowledge further with respected global leaders at the London Vision Clinic and Intitutio Zaldivar.
International Wealth of Experience
Dr Au is a registered ophthalmologist in both Australia and Singapore.
He is originally from Toronto, Canada and completed his undergraduate training in the UK at City St George's, University of London (formerly St George's Hospital Medical School) which included the Moorfields Hospital - Duke Elder Eye Unit.
He then moved to Singapore, completing his ACGME-I accredited ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Singapore National Eye Centre followed by a fellowship in Complex Cataracts at RVEEH. He was the recipient of the Clive and Joan Ward Staff Development Scholarship through Eastern Health and pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery at Ulster University.
Dr Au has also undertaken observerships and courses in Argentina, Canada, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States with various eminent ophthalmologists. He has operated in 5 of 7 continents over the years.
His diverse global experience allows him to provide individualised care across a wide range of ophthalmic specialties. He is proficient in Mandarin and Cantonese.
Leader
Dr Au is currently the Chair of RANZCO Younger Fellows Advisory Group. He is a recognized specialist and an invited speaker at conferences and symposiums globally.
He was the former Clinical Lead of the Acute Ophthalmology Service at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He contributed to the initial pandemic management at RVEEH based on his SARS & pandemic management experiences from Singapore.
He has undertaken many leadership roles throughout his career. These include serving as the Chief Registrar at RVEEH, Senior Lead Resident at SNEC, Singhealth Residency Commitee Member, Hospital Mess President at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Vice President of the International Student Society and Student Interviewer and Ambassador at St George's Hospital Medical School.
Outside of work he served as the Team Manager of the Canadian Dragons of Singapore dragon boat team between 2016-2017 and subsequently took the role of Team Advisor.
Philantropist
Dr Au is currently an active member of the Australian Health and Humanitarian Aid(AHHA). Years of refined skills managing complex cataracts has allowed him to join the distinguished ophthalmology team, fulfilling his high school dreams of working with a medical charity.
AHHA is an non-profit charity established in 2003. They conduct annual trips providing free cataract surgeries, medical and dental checkups to poor and unprivileged in Vietnam and Cambodia. They also provide water filtration units and humanitarian aid to the communities.
AHHA also fund raises for emergency relief for events such as the Nepal earthquakes, Victorian and Blue Mountains Bushfire, Queensland Floods, Vietnam Floods and many other community projects.

Educator
Dr Au is an avid teacher and has contributed to medical education of others throughout his career. He served as an Anatomy Demonstrator for 3 years during medical school, clinical supervisor to medical students in Australia and Singapore and clinical lecturer for SNEC DUKE NUS Ophthalmic Assistant & Technician course.
During his role as RVEEH Chief registrar and Senior Consultant, Dr Au was responsible for the educational programme coordination and delivery of the microsurgical training for Victorian trainees. He remains a Cataract Surgical Supervisor to trainee registrars at YRH. Dr Au also served as a member of the Victorian RANZCO Qualifications and Education Committee.
He has also contributed to GENEYE Pod, a Podcast series for the next generation of ophthalmic trainees, created by his fellowship mentor Dr Jacqueline Beltz.
